BP, the owner of lube brand Castrol, announced a deal with 7X Energy to install 9 gigawatts-worth of solar arrays across 12 states. The U.S. $220 million contract will nudge BP toward its goal of 50 GW of renewable power generation capacity by 2030 and net zero carbon emissions by 2050.

7X Energy is a utility-scale solar power development company based in Austin, Texas, a city 200 miles south of ExxonMobil’s boardroom in Irving, Texas. U.S. oil majors have been slower to invest in alternative energy technologies to the extent of their European counterparts.
