It’s time to stop measuring a lubricant business’s performance by the volume of product sold and the industry it occupies, argues Yana Wilkinson, Kline & Co.’s head of energy. We need much more intelligent management conversations.

Yana thinks a better lens through which to view the value chain is what she calls the arena. The arena is the entire space in which a business competes, cooperates, provides solutions and thrives, rather than the immediate links in the value chain. The arena also encompasses where the other sources of value are created, from where pressures on the value chain emanate.
