Nynas AB has entered a partnership with waste management firm Stena Recycling to collect, process and reuse used electrical transformer fluid.
Under the agreement, which was announced Dec. 19, Stena will supply used fluid collected from its existing European network from which it gathers used transformers and other utility equipment. Nynas will rerefine the fluid to make new transformer fluid.
Nynas, which is headquartered in Stockholm, was already rerefining used transformer fluids at its naphthenic base oil plant in Nynashamn, Sweden, to make new transformer fluid that it markets under the Nytro RR 900X label as a sustainable product.
Nynas has been gathering used fluid feedstock for that operation from its own customers, but the partnership with Stena will allow it to increase scale.
In the news release Nynas said the program will allow a greater number of power companies to reduce their carbon footprints.
“Besides contributing to resource saving when replacing virgin oil, NYTRO RR 900X also reduces over 70% of [greenhouse gas] emissions compared to virgin Nynas oil over its lifecycle,” Nynas Sustainability Manager Marika Rangstedt said.
Stena is based in Gothenburg, Sweden, and provides a range of waste management services.
