Poland Proposal Would Encourage Rerefining

Poland’s government will introduce a waste oil management bill to encourage that used lubricants be recycled into base stocks instead of being burned as heating fuel, according to a report presented recently at a press conference in Warsaw.

New Denmark Rerefinery Starts Up

Joint venture Avista Green announced last week that its new base oil rerefinery in Kalundborg, Denmark was operational. The facility replaces an Avista rerefinery that halted production in July 2017 following a fire.

Lubricating Plastics via Microcapsules

Chemists at two German research institutes have devised lubricant-filled microcapsules that can be mixed into thermoplastics. They hope the material will extend the service life of plastic components and reduce resource use, said one of the lead researchers.

Spanish oil major Repsol reported that second-quarter operating income for its lubricants business was €5 million (U.S. $5.9 million) higher year-on-year, mainly due to higher margins across all its products segments. According to its interim management report, the lubricants business was also up €11 million year-on-year for the first half of 2020, due in part to the contribution made by the company’s international lubricants businesses in Mexico and Southeast Asia.
