The Republic of Cyprus sold 111 metric tons of lubricants from filling stations dotted around the southern part of the island in June, according to statistics provided by the Cypriot government last week.

There was modest growth in sales of 1% from 110 tons in the same month of 2023. For the first six months of 2024, the island’s drivers bought 628 tons from filling stations, a 10% increase over the same period in 2023 at 573 tons.

Total lubricant sales in the same month were 255 tons, down from 278 tons in May. This includes sales to government entities, British and United Nations military bases, ships and to other customers. For the first six months of 2024, total lubricant sales were 1,480 tons, up from 1,412 tons in the same half year in 2023.

The southern jurisdiction of the island saw almost 35% more vehicles registered in 2023, up to 45,494, according to the latest figures published by the Cyprus Statistical Service. This could account for the uptick in lubricants sales in 2024.

However, the proportion of gasoline internal combustion engine cars registered between January and April 2024 fell to 48.9% from 60.1% in the same period of 2023. At the same time, the share of electric vehicles went up to 3.6% from 2.3% and hybrids from 37.4% to 26.6%.
