PFC Methodology Gets Industry-first Certification

Certification agency TÜV Rheinland Energy GmbH has given the thumbs up to the “Methodology for Product Carbon Footprint Calculations for Lubricants, Greases and Other Specialities.”

The methodology was co-authored by Europe’s two foremost lubricants industry associations – the Union of the European Lubricants Industry and the Technical Association of the European Lubricants Industry.

TÜV Rheinland Energy’s review is an industry first and gives companies the opportunity to validate their product carbon footprint calculations with third-party certification. This drives consistency and transparency across value chains, explained the co-authors in a press release. It also lays the groundwork for hamonization across the global lubricants, fluids and grease industry.

The methodology was first published in September 2023 and was developed by ATIEL and UEIL with external advisors and Carbon Minds, a data analytics company based in Cologne. The document uses ISO 14067, 2018 and the GHG Protocol Product Standard, 2011.

TÜV Rheinland Energy concluded in its assessment that “the PCF methodology approach, is scientifically based and reflects the state of the art. The approach and principles behind the methodology are generally appropriate for the assessment of potential greenhouse gas emissions impacts of lubricants, greases and other specialities.”

“This recent development now allows stakeholders to obtain third-party certification of their PCFs in accordance with the ATIEL and UEIL methodology, strengthening trust and collaboration across the sector,” Mattia Adani, UEIL president, said.
