Shell announced last week that it has completed an expansion of its grease manufacturing plant in Bangkok, tripling the facility’s production capacity to a level that can meet half of Thailand’s demand.
The project increased the amount of grease that can be made at the site from 5,000 metric tons per year to 15,000 t/y. The company did not disclose the cost of the project.
Officials said the plant can now produce enough to supply half of annual grease demand in Thailand, and they added that the facility will meet give local customers more supply chain security and allow the company to offer products that are more sustainable.
In a June 20 news release, the company added that some of the plant’s output will be exported to as many as 40 countries in the region, in addition to those sold locally.
Shell said the facility is now also its largest grease production site in Thailand.
The British energy giant said it aims to convert the facility to using only solar energy so that it can reduce carbon dioxide emissions. It added that it installed equipment that is highly efficient in heat transfer, reducing the need for hot oil by up to 20%.
